If you live in Hazelwood, you already know the rhythm of August. The pool is still open, the grass still needs cutting, and the calendar looks quiet until it suddenly isn't. What most residents underestimate is how tight the window really is between the last true pool weekend and the moment fall programming takes over.
This is a short guide to that window. Specific places, specific dates, and a few routines worth rearranging before Labor Day catches you by surprise.
The last real pool weekends
White Birch Bay Aquatic Center sits at 1186 Teson Road and runs a noon to 6:00 PM schedule seven days a week through the peak of the season. If you have not been in a while, the layout has more to it than a neighborhood pool has any right to. The 25-yard fitness pool, nicknamed the Shark Tank, has six lap lanes and two springboards under lifeguard supervision, and the lazy river is really an adventurous wave river with elevated rock walls and an island. There is a zero-depth entry for the youngest swimmers and two waterslides for everyone else.
Two things are worth knowing before you plan a visit.
First, the season is finite. The operating schedule is strictly seasonal, running from late May until Hazelwood schools return to session, after which the center often switches to a weekend-only schedule from noon to 6:00 PM. That means the last weekday visits of the year are already in sight, and the weekend-only stretch is a narrow one.
Second, the weather has a veto. The pools only open if the air temperature reaches at least 72°F, which is not usually a problem in August but starts to matter in September. A cool front on a Saturday can quietly close the gate.
If you have been meaning to try the Shark Tank for actual lap swimming, the competitive pool is open exclusively for adult swim during certain weekday hours, usually from noon to 1:00 PM. That is a better tip than the pool's own signage tends to advertise.
September 12: the day the calendar bends
Hazelwood Day is the closing bracket on summer for anyone who treats Howdershell Park as home turf. It is a free, city-run event, and the schedule is more layered than a lot of residents realize.
Here is what is currently on the books for Saturday, September 12 at 6810 Howdershell Road:
- Car show, 3:00 to 6:00 PM. All makes and models welcome, prizes awarded in Stock and Custom by year division, and you must be registered by 4:30 PM to be judged. Registration and the event itself are free.
- Live music and family programming into the evening. The park hosts Bubble Bus, live music, inflatables, and more, with the day running from 3:00 to 9:00 PM.
- A fall festival lineage. The event was formally known as Harvestfest before being rebranded as Hazelwood Day, which is why longtime residents still call it by the old name.
The practical read: Hazelwood Day runs six hours, but the useful blocks are the car show in the daylight and the music after the sun drops. Pick one. Trying to hold the whole afternoon with young kids is how good days end in meltdowns.

Where to eat when you don't want to drive to Clayton
Hazelwood's dining reputation gets shortchanged, mostly because the highway signage tilts toward chains. The independent list is longer than newcomers assume. Rather than a ranked roundup, here is a working map organized by what you actually want on a given night.

Two others worth naming without a category: Spot House Restaurant and Bar and Pearl Cafe, both of which turn up in the current top-ten roundups of the town, and Massa's and Roberto's Italian Restaurant for the classic Italian slot. Hazelwood also gets a fried-chicken outpost from Lotawata Creek's Chick N Shack, which is a spinoff of the Fairview Heights original.
The larger point is that the working list of independent Hazelwood restaurants is closer to a dozen than the three or four most residents cycle through. If your Friday rotation has calcified, it is by choice.
Park routines worth changing up
Howdershell gets the Hazelwood Day attention, but the city has seven other parks that carry the weight the rest of the year. If your dog knows one of them by smell, try one of the others this month.
- White Birch Park. The aquatic center is the anchor, but the surrounding park is a legitimate picnic destination the day the pool closes for the season.
- Harry S. Truman Park. Central to the Musick and Howdershell corridors.
- Musick Park. Neighborhood-scale, quieter on weekday evenings.
- Pershall Park. Convenient to the north side of the city.
- Queen Ann Park. Small and often overlooked.
- Aubuchon Park. Worth adding to a walking rotation.
- Rock Pointe Park. The one most Hazelwood residents cannot place on a map without looking, which is the whole reason to go.
One practical note. The city Parks and Recreation department runs a summer session of yoga and adult swim programming out of its facilities, including senior yoga, chair yoga, and daytime yoga sessions for adults, plus adult swim slots for lap exercise in the competition pool. Session two typically wraps by the time schools return, which is another reason the late-August window matters.
The thesis, said plainly
Hazelwood is a place where late summer is not a slow fade. It is a two-week hinge. White Birch Bay narrows to weekends, then to closed. Parks and Rec winds down its second summer session. Then Hazelwood Day lands on the calendar, and the whole town spends an afternoon at Howdershell before the light starts changing at 7:00 PM instead of 8:30.

Pick two weekends between now and September 12 and treat them like the last real pool days they probably are. Pick one restaurant on the list above you have never actually walked into.
